Finally — a new vegetarian restaurant!

I can hardly wait to try out the Green Owl Diner, opening Nov. 1 on Atwood Ave.  To my knowledge, it will be Madison’s only exclusive vegetraian restaurant and I’m so happy to see that this niche is being filled.  It is owned by Jennie Capellaro, who also makes food for Mother Fool’s and Alchemy, which bodes well.

I was exchanging emails with a friend recently and she was asking me about whether I’d have any interest in opening a vegetarian restaurant or offering food classes, because, she said, it seems that Madison is becoming more into the idea of supporting a plant-based diet, especially surrounding the recent hype of Michael Pollan coming to town (who I was so sorry to miss!)

While I don’t think that opening a restaurant is in my cards, the idea of puruiing cooking clsses appeals to me, and I do think that the support is out there in Madison for more veg-friendly initiatives.  I like the grassroots nature of a lot of little business bentures that are developing, such as NessAlla Kombucha.  I remember taking brewing classes from these two women at the co-op a few years back and it’s been very cool to see their product expanding into an entreprenueral venture — they’re now selling their kombucha at the farmer’s market, the co-op and even Woodman’s.

Anyway, it’s encouraging to see these women-run businesses expand and it’s been a good reminder to keep going.
